Barcelona's opera house, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, was founded on the Rambla in 1847 and has continued over the years to fulfil its role as a culture and arts centre and one of the symbols of the city.

Creation is the backbone of the National Theatre of Catalonia's activity and its main objective is to show contemporary Catalan and foreign plays, the revision of the classics, dance and promotion of Catalan cultural tradition, but also to open a window onto artistic renovation.

The Palau de la Música Catalana, full of light and of colour, is also today, a cultural asset that is open to the world, whose halls and areas host concerts of all genres and styles, cultural, social and business events, congresses, conferences, exhibitions, etc.

The Teatre Lliure is considered one of the most prestigious in Catalonia. Founded in 1976, the theatre features exhibitions and also their own productions.

Dedicated to theatre and performing arts, the Teatro Tivoli has also seen some performances of opera.
